Is being cold bad for your immune system?

It's been said that there are two kinds of people in the world; those who love winter and those who hate it. But whether you love or hate it, you may find yourself wondering why you feel so lousy when it's cold out.

The truth is that our bodies are built to work best when it's warm. Hot climates are where our food sources are most plentiful, and we evolved to thrive there.

But now we live in an environment that is very different from how our ancestors lived. We spend more time indoors, are exposed to extreme temperatures (cold/heat), and eat processed food rather than fresh.

This means that our bodies aren’t used to these extremes. That means that when we do venture outdoors, we're left feeling tired, sluggish, and even sick.

However, there are some ways to reduce these effects. Keep your body hydrated. Water is essential for your body to function properly and eliminate toxins.

Also, ensure you eat healthy food. Your body will stay at its best when you eat healthy foods. This is especially important for those who spend long periods inside.

It is worth taking a few extra minutes each day to meditate. Meditation helps you relax your mind and body, which makes it easier to deal with stress and illness.

What should my diet consist of?

You should eat lots of vegetables and fruits. They contain vitamins and minerals which help keep your immune system strong. Vegetables and fruits are high in fiber which helps to digest and fill you up. Include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

You should also drink lots of water. Water flushes toxins out of the body and helps to feel full between meals. Drink about eight glasses each day.

Choose whole grains over refined grains. Whole grains retain all nutrients including B vitamins, iron and zinc as well as calcium, magnesium, calcium, protein, and magnesium. Refined grains lack some nutrition.

Avoid sugary drinks. Sugary drinks can be a source of empty calories, which can lead to obesity. Instead, choose water, milk, and unsweetened tea.

Avoid fast food. Fast food has little nutritional value. While it might taste good, it won't give your body the energy it needs to function properly. Instead, stick to healthier options such salads and soups as well sandwiches and pasta.

Limit your alcohol consumption. You can reduce your intake of alcohol by limiting the amount of empty calories. Limit your intake of alcohol to two drinks per week.

Try to cut down on red meat. Red meats contain high amounts of saturated fats and cholesterol. Opt for lean cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish, and turkey instead.

What's the difference between fat or sugar?

Fat is an energy source that comes from food. Sugar is a sweet, naturally occurring substance in fruits and vegetables. Both sugars and fats have the same calories. But fats are twice as calories as sugars.

Fats are stored within the body and can contribute to obesity. They may cause cholesterol buildup and lead to strokes or heart attacks.

Sugars are quickly absorbed by the body and provide instant energy. This causes blood sugar levels to rise. High blood glucose levels can lead to type II diabetes.

What does "vitamin" actually mean?

Vitamins can be described as organic compounds found in food. Vitamins aid us in absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. Vitamins cannot be produced by the body. They must be acquired from food.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve quickly in water. You can find vitamin C,B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin and B3 or niacin, B3/niacin, B6/pyridoxine, folic Acid, biotin and pantothenic Acid as examples. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified according to their biological activity. There are eight main groups of vitamins.

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - vital for proper nerve function, and energy production.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E - Required for good vision & reproduction
  • K - required for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R – Required for the formation of red blood vessels.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For example, the RDA for vitamin A is 400 micrograms per dayfor adults 19 years or older. Pregnant mothers need 600 micrograms per days because it is vital for the development and growth of their baby. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children aged between 1-18 years require 800 micrograms of sugar per day, while overweight children need 1000 micrograms. Children who are underweight receive 1200 micrograms every day to meet their nutritional requirements.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms is the minimum daily intake for adults over 50 years old to maintain good health. Mothers who are pregnant, nursing, or have a high nutrient need will require 3000 micrograms a day.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant or nursing need more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers require 5000 micrograms daily when breast milk production is occurring.
