Here are 10 tips to help you live a healthy life

How to lead a healthy lifestyle

We live in a fast-paced world that makes it difficult to get enough sleep, consume too much alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and eat too much. We don’t care enough about our health.

When you work full-time, it is difficult to maintain a healthy diet and exercise program. It's even harder when you are stressed because your mind tells you that you cannot handle the situation anymore. So we feel guilty and give up.

You may feel that something is not right with your body. Consult a doctor immediately to get his/her opinion on your current condition. If nothing is abnormal, it might be stress due to your job.

Some people think they're lucky because their jobs let them go to the gym on a regular basis or they have friends who help them stay fit. However, those people are really lucky. Those people don't have any problems. They managed everything. I wish everyone could become like them. Unfortunately, many of us don’t know how to manage our personal and work lives. Many people end up with bad habits which eventually lead to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and many others.

These are some tips to help you improve your life.

  1. Get adequate sleep - 7 hours a day minimum, 8 hours maximum. This means sleeping properly and not consuming caffeine in the hour before bed. Caffeine blocks the melatonin hormones making it hard to fall asleep. Also, ensure your bedroom is darkened and clean. Consider using blackout curtains, especially if working late at night.
  2. Get healthy - Start your day with a good breakfast. Avoid sugary foods, fried foods, processed foods, and white breads. Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grain for lunch. It is recommended that afternoon snacks be high in fiber and protein, such as nuts and seeds, beans, fish, and dairy products. Avoid sugary snacks like cookies, chips, chocolates, and cakes.
  3. Get enough water. The majority of people don’t drink enough water. Water is good for us. It helps us lose more calories, keeps the skin soft and youthful, improves digestion, and flushes out toxins. Six glasses of water per day will help you lose weight quicker. The best way of determining your hydration is to check the color in your urine. Dehydrated means yellow; slightly dehydrated means orange; normal means pink; overhydrated means red; clear means highly-overhydrated.
  4. Regular exercise can increase energy and decrease depression. Walking is a good way to get fit and improve your mood. Even though it may look easy, walking requires focus and concentration. Your brain must be able to concentrate on walking, while taking deep breaths and slowing down. A 30 minute walk at a moderate pace for about 100 calories can burn between 100-150 calories. Start slow, and then increase the pace. To prevent injuries, be sure to stretch after exercising.
  5. Positive thinking is crucial for mental health. If we are positive, we create a happier environment in our minds. Negative thoughts can cause anxiety and drain our energy. Keep your motivation high by focusing on the things you want to do. Reduce the number of tasks you have to do in order to feel less overwhelmed. Do not be discouraged if you fail, just get up and try again.
  6. Learn to say No. We are often so busy that our attention is not focused on the important things we are doing. It is important you can say no when it is necessary. Saying 'no' does not mean being rude. A No means that you can't take care of something now. There are always other options to finish the job later. Be clear about your boundaries. Ask someone else to help you out. This work can be delegated to someone else.
  7. Take care to your body. Keep an eye on your diet. Eating healthier foods will boost your metabolism and help you shed those extra pounds. Avoid eating anything heavy or oily as they can raise cholesterol levels. It is a good idea to eat three meals and two snacks per day. The recommended daily intake should be between 2000 and 2500 calories.
  8. Meditate – Meditation is great for stress relief and anxiety. You can relax your mind by simply sitting still with your closed eyes. This exercise will allow you to have clarity of thought which can be very useful in making decisions. Meditation will help you feel calmer and happier.
  9. Breakfast is the most important meal in the day. Skipping breakfast may cause you to eat more at lunchtime. It is never too late to eat a balanced breakfast as long as you eat within 1 hour of waking. A healthy breakfast can boost your energy levels and help you control your hunger.
  10. Good food is healthy. Avoid junk food or any food items that contain preservatives or artificial ingredients. These products keep your body acidic and trigger cravings. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that improve overall health.
